Japanese Titles in the Sei Kosho Shorei Kai
The Sei Kosho Shorei Kai utilizes shogo (称号), or titles. These titles are independent of rank and do not effect it. The only way to hold a title in the Sei Kosho Shorei Kai is to be appointed to it by the Hanshi. Earning the minimum dan ranking for a shogo title does NOT automatically grant the practitioner that title. All titles are appointed by the Hanshi. The titles used in the Sei Kosho Shorei Kai are NOT RANKS. They refer to job titles and responsibilities.
Sei Kosho Shorei Kai ShogoHanshi (範士)
Hanshi means“root master”. In the Sei Kosho Shorei Kai, there is only one Hanshi. The Hanshi is permitted to a black belt with a gold horizontal stripe. Kyoshi (教士) Kyoshi means “expert teacher,” it is can also be translated as “professor” or “assistant professor.” A minimum rank of at least rokudan (6th degree black belt) is required. The Sei Kosho Shorei Kai has multiple Kyoshi. Kyoshi are permitted to wear a black belt with a red horizontal stripe. Renshi (錬士) Renshi literally means “polished teacher.” It requires a minimum rank of yondan (4th degree black belt). The Sei Kosho Shorei Kai has multiple Renshi. Renshi are permitted to wear a black belt with a purple horizontal stripe. Sei Shihan (大師範) Sei Shihan means “senior advisor” Minimum rank nanadan (7th degree black belt) Dai Shihan are permitted to wear a solid red belt. Chutoku Shihan (師範) Minimum rank sandan (3rd degree black belt) Chutoku Shihan are permitted to wear a black belt with a blue horizontal stripe Shihan (師範) Shihan means “exemplary teacher” It requires a minimum rank of Shodan (1st degree black belt). The Sei Kosho Shorei Kai has multiple Shihan. This is typically bestowed upon teachers who are providing service and growth to the organization.
